why use GIS with document management?
The power of GIS is information visualisation. It is estimated that over 80% of information has a spatial component. That is, information that can be mapped or linked to a map. Information presented as a map is far more easily and quickly interpreted. GIS is often called the natural interface because it is easier to interpret information displayed on a map, than the same information listed as repetitive rows of text. A map interface is also very quick to learn and easy to use. It offers both immediate results for the novice user and informative results for the power user.
As documents may be searched using an interactive map, thereby selecting documents based on location, results are obtained quickly. Documents may also be selected that spatially relate to each other e.g. documents in the next room or next property. This dramatically increases the power of a normal document management system as it adds another search layer over and above text-based systems. |
